While waiting for a train at a quiet Norwegian village, I noticed children, some barely eight years old, getting off the train on their own. Tiny backpacks, confident steps. They walked along the path home without a hint of fear, as if the whole world already belonged to them.

It felt extraordinary and yet so ordinary to them. No one stared, no one worried. It was a kind of freedom that came not from protection, but from trust.

Perhaps true safety isn’t created by holding on tighter, but by teaching confidence early. Trust, after all, is the first bridge between fear and freedom.

Back home, even at twice their age, we’re rarely left alone to walk. Seeing those little ones move with such assurance made me realize, independence isn’t a milestone; it’s a mindset nurtured quietly, step by step.

What would change if we raised our children to walk through the world with trust, not just caution?
